Romeo and Juliet

In a remake of the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, I will convey the tension between two families and two lovers in a unit set on a Proscenium theatre styled stage.  The play will reflect a modern twist on the original 14th century stylings.  It takes place in a post-apocalyptic society where the remaining population is led by two wealthy families with opposing views.   The families’ wealth is reflected by the status of the ancient white marble churches and government buildings they live in, though they are decaying ruins.  There will also be white crepey drapes.  (As the play goes on, blood will be increasingly shed and left to stain the marble, gowns, and drapes). Like the set, their clothing was once considered beautiful and luxurious, but is now thread and bare and falling apart.  To reflect the supermodernity of the period, accessories will be futuristic -- almost robotic, whereas the weapons will be swords to represent an archaic vulgarity.  The cold blood between the two families and the chilling fate of the two lovers will be reflected by a color scheme of cool blues, reds, and purples.  The set will be lit by one large circle in the background that represents the sun/moon that will shift between colors to convey the heat of violence, the warmth of new dawns, and the eerie secrecy of the night.
